Highly adaptable K-12 curriculum for Character Education: The Character First Program
The Character First program was developed by Character First Education, a division of Strata Leadership based in Oklahoma, USA. This K-12 character education curriculum focuses on a set of character traits, helping children learn about and apply them to life through discussion and activities. The K-5 Elementary Curriculum is comprised of lesson guides for 20 character traits (see below for list). Each lesson includes a background to the trait, examples that connect it to real life, discussion and learning activities, as well as a take-home family Connection worksheet for further reinforcement at home.
One strength of this program is its flexibility. The program is designed to be integrated into existing curricula, and, educators can decide when and how they incorporate the discrete activities of each trait. Also, although traits are structured, they do not have to follow a prescribed sequence. In addition, Lesson Guides for each trait are sold separately, so schools can purchase only the ones most applicable to their needs.
Character traits available in the K-5 curriculum include Attentiveness, Availability, Compassion, Conservation, Courage, Determination, Diligence, Enthusiasm, Flexibility, Forgiveness, Generosity, Gratefulness, Honesty, Loyalty, Obedience, Orderliness, Patience, Respect, Responsibility, Self-Control, Tolerance, and Wisdom. There are add-on traits for the 5-12 curriculum, as well as a separate set of lesson guides for pre-school children.
